Puyallup Public Market RFP

Submitted March 2003

This project was a response to a request for proposals from the City of Puyallup for a new market/community center.

The new public market/community building should compliment the new library without competing with or duplicating it since it is a different building type situated on its own portion of the Pioneer Park campus. Whereas the perception of the library is based on park vistas, the new public market/community building should be both a street front building along S. Meridian and a backdrop to the park setting from the north. Several existing key site elements can be retained in the site planning of the new Public Market/Community Building and its attached exterior sheltered space. Beginning with the requirements for egress and sensible circulation around approximately 10’ x 10” market vendor stalls, we created a street front entrance from S. Meridian that is recessed and centralized to create a dramatic entrance to the 28’ tall market hall. At the west side of the building we have retained the existing lane as a drop off point for vendors and pedestrians.

The larger market hall volume is pulled back from S. Meridian street so that the massing of the building can step down at the primary street front to house the permanent vendor and office to create a storefront near the intersection of S. Meridian and 4th Ave. SW. The parapet of the lower portion of the building will screen the roof mounted mechanical equipment. The south elevation along 4th Ave. S. is intended to continue the street front feeling with a deeper canopy and a rhythm of 8’ to 16’ wide x 11’ tall rollup doors. Small clerestory openings above the canopy allows southern daylight into the market hall.

Clerestory glazing accepts northern daylight over the walkways between vendor booths. These clerestories rest on 15 parallam (PSL) trusses at 10’ on center that span 60’ of the 70’ wide interior space. The north ends of these trusses bear on deep glulam beams that run east-west and are supported by columns at 20’ on center. This bearing line creates a smaller 10’ wide x 160’ long service bay with the stage occupying the center two bays. When not in use by market vendors opening to the sheltered space at the north side of the building, this service bay can be used to serve the larger portion of the interior volume for community events such as banquets and weddings.
