Commercial Work

Monsoon
Completed February 1999 | Built by Owner
Conversion of a Capitol Hill neighborhood cafe into a successful restaurant specializing in Vietnamese cuisine. The existing bar countertop was reused, elevated to a more suitable height, with the supporting wall strengthened to eliminate existing steel knee braces. Stainless steel facing panels were added to set the bar apart from the new surrounding red oak casework. Banquette seating was added along the north and south walls to define the seating area. Casework “bookends” separate the banquettes from the kitchen and bathrooms and provide storage for menus and table settings. The ceiling was reconfigured to provide better artificial and natural lighting and to coordinate with the new plan layout. The exterior funkiness was toned down with painted stucco, a small sign above the entry doors and a retractable awning to create shelter from the weather.
